The Export-Import Bank of the United States: Supporting American Jobs by Helping U.S. Exporters Compete Globally

What is the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM)?

The Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) is the official export credit agency (ECA) of the federal government. It was originally established in 1934 as the Export-Import Bank of Washington to help businesses during the Great Depression. After being restructured by Congress in 1945, it became an independent agency under the Export-Import Bank Act. In 1968, it officially adopted its current name.

Often described as the “insurer of last resort,” EXIM helps level the global playing field by filling financing and insurance gaps left by the private sector.

EXIM is currently authorized through September 2026.

How the Export-Import Bank Supports U.S. Exports

EXIM finances global infrastructure projects that rely on U.S.-made capital equipment and services. It also enables American exporters to:

  • Offer credit terms to international buyers
  • Access working capital through lender guarantees
  • Protect against foreign buyer nonpayment
  • Support for international buyers of U.S. capital equipment

The core mission: support U.S. jobs by enabling exports.

Why the Export-Import Bank is Essential for U.S. Companies

Most developed economies have their own export credit agencies.  Similar to EXIM, they support their companies in the global marketplace.  Without EXIM, U.S. companies would face a disadvantage against global competition—especially when foreign competitors have government-backed financial support.

⚠️ Important Note: EXIM is not a bank in the traditional sense. It does not typically lend directly to exporters—this is a common misconception among new exporters. Instead, it provides support through insurance and loan guarantees.
